What is a Freedom Card?

It is a robust ‘smart’ type technology card designed to make bus travel easier, quicker and safer for both the traveller and the driver.  Being credit card size it slips easily into your wallet or purse.  It removes the need to use cash by just placing the card on the reader tray on boarding the bus.  The fare cost will be deducted automatically, or the validity confirmed if using a pass.

How do I get a Freedom Card?

Go into the Citybus Travelshop on Exeter Street near the Viaduct.
Our staff will explain the various options available for your initial Freedom card.  A passport size photo will be taken by the staff for your card identification. You may pay by cash or credit card, with an annual Direct Debit option also being available.
Parents have the option of buying their children DayRiders, and/or stored value, which will stay stored on the card until used.  Children can feel more secure by not having to carry cash around with them.

What are the options available?

Pass – for multiple options and zones.
DayRider – for up to10 DayRiders.
Stored Value – in values of £5, £10 or £20.
A multi-use card can be produced to combine product usage.

What happens next?

Once you have your card you may top-up on bus for 7-day pass ‘top-ups’ or in the Travelshop for longer pass periods.  Direct Debit options will top-up periodically.
DayRiders and Stored Value can be topped up on bus, using the same values as found in the Travelshop.
If a card is lost, stolen or damaged it can be ‘hotlisted’ and a replacement card issued.

Eventually the technology will be able to link up with RTPI providing efficient, up to date and regular information to the bus user.
Citybus will be able to gather passenger details and bus-usage data.   The data will play a vital role in making bus travel more pleasurable and reliable whilst building stronger customer relationships and providing more customer focused services.
